Basic Google SEO

Why SEO Matters for Your Website

Fundamentally, your website exists to generate business — and Google remains by far the most popular way people find it. As of 2026, Google still handles around 89–90% of all public web searches worldwide, and over 95% of mobile searches specifically. Having a Google-friendly website is therefore still your top priority.

Many elements of SEO require technical expertise, but there’s a lot customers can do themselves to improve organic ranking and help their website climb higher in search results.

A note on AI search: Tools like AI Overviews in Google, and separate AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Perplexity, have started taking a small (but growing) slice of search traffic. The good news is that the fundamentals below — clear, well-structured, genuinely useful content — are exactly what these AI systems draw on too, so good SEO practice hasn’t been made obsolete by them.

Google’s Own Guide

Google publishes an official SEO Starter Guide, which is the best primary source and is kept up to date:

Simpler Explanations for Beginners

Some parts of Google’s guide are easy to follow, but it gets more technical further in. If you’d prefer a gentler introduction, search YouTube for a recent, well-reviewed “SEO for beginners” tutorial — look for one published or updated within the last year or so, since SEO advice dates quickly and older videos (including several we used to recommend here) now contain outdated guidance. Good search terms to try:

  • “SEO for beginners” (current year)
  • “WordPress SEO tutorial” (current year)
  • “SEO basics explained simply”

Favour videos from recognised sources (Google Search Central, Moz, Ahrefs, Search Engine Journal, Yoast) over generic uploads, as these are more likely to be kept current.
